Poke Milkweed
z: 3 to 8, Found at woodland edges.
sun: Best in Dappled/ Partial SHADE.
moisture: Slightly moist to Medium soils.
height: Can get 6+ feet (ergo "exalta").
bloom: Summer white pinkish flowers like fading fireworks.
** typically takes 3 years before blooms
else: Supposedly deer resistant (but not rabbit resistant)!
Tall Green Milkweed
z: 4 to 9, Found in upland tall grass prairies.
sun: Best in Full Sun (but tolerant to afternoon shade).
moisture: Adaptable to soil moisture levels.
height: Can get 4+ feet.
bloom: Prolific summer white (with green & purple tinge) bushy flower.
** blooms 2nd year
else: One of the longer blooming milkweeds with the most blooms.
SandHill or Pinewoods Milkweed
z: 7 to 10, and can you tell by the common names it's typically Found growing in the sandhills and pine forests in the SOuth East!
sun: FULL SUN
moisture: DRY Sandy Soils
height: varies from 1 to 2 feet.
bloom: White flowers with a touch of lavender.
** typically takes 3 years before blooms
else: Tough to find for sale. Low growing, sprawling plant with purplish stems and veins.
2022: Grown in ZipSet degradable pots (plant entire pot to minimize root shock!)
Woodson Swamp Milkweed (light pink)
Native EAST of the Appalachian Mountains
z: 3 to 9, Found in riparian zones and wetlands.
sun: Best in Full Sun (but tolerant to afternoon shade).
moisture: MOIST soils but will tolerate less moisture when established.
height: Can get 4+ feet.
bloom: Blooms first year Vanilla scented light pink flowers during midsummer.
else: Grows in loose clumps with slowly creeping rhizomes (not aggressive!)
Aquatic Milkweed
z: 6 to 9, Found in riparian zones and wetlands.
sun: Best in Partial SHADE but can take Full Sun.
moisture: Hydrated & MOIST soils but will tolerate less moisture when established.
height: SHORT ~ 2 feet.
bloom: Blooms first year and ALL summer white (with a pink tinge) flower.
else: Only milkweed without "fluff" in the seed pods.
Prairie Milkweed
z: 4 to 7, Found in wet meadows & prairies.
sun: Full SUN.
moisture: Medium moist, drought tolerant.
height: Can get 4+ feet.
bloom: Summer fragrant deep pink flowers.
*typically takes 3 years to bloom
else: Similar to Common MW with larger, smooth leaves and not as invasive. Named for William Sullivant, early american botanist from Ohio in the mid 1800's.
Common Milkweed.
z: 3 to 8, Best known native milkweed found throughout the central and eastern US in prairies and fields.
sun: Full SUN.
height: Can get 5+ feet.
bloom: Summer fragrant dusty pink flowers. Takes several years to bloom!
else: Has a deep tap root but also spreads (aggressively!) with creeping rhizomes.
** Not great for containers
Butterfly Weed
z: 3 to 10, Found in pastures & fields.
sun: Best in Full Sun with a bit of afternoon shade.
moisture: Medium to DRY soil.
height: SHORT ~ 2 feet.
bloom: Blooms first year Orange showy flowers early summer through fall.
else: Voted as Perennial Plant of the Year 2017!!
Whorled Milkweed
z: 3 to 9, Found in hill prairies to open woodlands, from Canada to Florida, east of the Rocky Mountians.
sun: Full to Part Sun.
moisture: Medium to DRY soil.
height: SHORT ~ 1 1/2 feet.
bloom: Late summer white flowers.
** Typically blooms 3rd year
Redring Milkweed
z: 3 to 9, Found growing along truck routes through managed pine forests. Typically habitat is upland savannas and woodland edges.
sun: Dappled SHADE.
moisture: Medium to DRY soil.
height: varies from 1 to 3 feet.
bloom: Late spring white snowball flower with a hint of red.
**typically blooms 3rd year.
else: Tough to find for sale.
Heart Leaf Milkweed
z: 7 to 10, Northern Sierra & Cascade Range, Grows in rocky slopes in mixed coniferous forests.
sun: Slight DAPPLED Sun.
moisture: Medium to DRY soil.
height: from 1 to 2 feet.
bloom: Early season dark purple/ burgandy flowers and heart shaped leaves.
** typically takes 3 years to bloom
else: Not typically seen outside it's native area. Only the ones planted in containers survived in my yard.

moisture: medium to dry soils
height: SHORT up to 2 feet
bloom: Blooms first year with a white flower

z: 3 to 9, Found in rocky/ sandy range lands and hillside prairies.
sun: Full SUN.
moisture: Medium to dry.
height: Can get 3+ feet.
bloom: Late spring to Summer fragrant white flowers.
Showy Milkweed
z: 3 to 9, Found in prairies, seasonally wet meadows & mountain areas.
sun: Full SUN.
moisture: Adaptable, best in Medium moist, drought tolerant.
height: Can get 4+ feet.
bloom: Summer fragrant pink, "stary" flowers. Takes several years for blooms!
else: Similar to Common MW with "showier" flowers and not as invasive.
Broadleaf Milkweed

Pine Needle Milkweed
** My first year growing this species!
Tropical Milkweed (red/yellow, orange/yellow and all yellow varieties)
Easy & Fast growing milkweed! Expect the leaves to be tattered as the season progresses (the FAVORITE Host plant for Monarch Caterpillars in my yard!!) The leaves will grow back as long as the plant has a good root system.

bloom: Spring to Early Fall.
else: Evergreen in southern states. BEST Managment practice is to cut back HARD after Monarch Fall Migration.
Giant Milkweed (white & purple varieties)
Large (very large) tropical milkweed for dry coastal areas. Large white or lavender waxy flowers. NOT fragrant and NOT COLD TOLERANT!!
z: 8 to 10
sun: Best in FULL SUn with a bit of afternoon Shade.
moisture: Medium soils.
height: Can get 10+ feet. Mine are shorter since grown in containers.
bloom: Spring to Early Fall or whenever the weather is warm enough.
else: Fast grower & up to > 6 feet in a large container. However, the "white" did bloom "purple" and the purple hasn't bloomed yet.
additional note: I'm seeing it's tough for 1st instar caterpillars to grow but 4th & 5th instars quickly devour the large leaves.
Crown Procera Milkweed
Large (very large) tropical milkweed. Thick silvery leaves and white/purple waxy flowers. VERY fragrant but NOT COLD TOLERANT!!

moisture: Medium soils.
height: Can get 10+ feet. Mine are shorter since grown in containers.
bloom: Spring to Early Fall or whenever the weather is warm enough.
else: SLOW grower to start BUT once planted and the roots allowed to streatch it quickly takes off!!
additional note: I'm seeing it's tough for 1st instar caterpillars to grow but 4th & 5th instars quickly devour the large leaves.

z: 5 to 9 (herbaceous perennial - plants go dormant & die down in winter)
sun: Best in dappled sun but very versitile from full sun (w/ ample moisture) to almost full shade.
moisture: again adaptable but perfers moist (well draining) but can take it a bit drier as well.
Soil: does like organically rich soils so add a good dose of compost.
